00:09:55
Lorenzo Ramírez: No.

00:09:56

Pues seguramente no.

00:17:36

No?

00:25:21

00:26:12
Lorenzo Ramírez: Anteriores, que además fue in crescendo, fue in crescendo.

00:26:16

00:26:59
Lorenzo Ramírez: Un placer, como siempre. Un placer como siempre. Un fuerte abrazo.

ENGLISH:

00:01:02
César Vidal: Here we are back, as we had announced, at the end of the takeoff and we are back to start that double program and continuous session that we have of Hispanic Culture every Monday in La Voz, there are people who go looking for it and then say nothing more than braying about Hispanicity and the hydrosphere and all this nonsense. And then, when it comes to actually talking about Hispanic culture, they show a terrible lack of culture. We do not dedicate 1/1 of that double program and continuous session on Mondays to talk about the history of Spain, which is almost, almost Spain and has almost ceased to be Hispania. And then, as you know, we are concerned that the great gift of Spain to mankind, which is the Spanish language, which, by the way, is a language that cannot be studied in some regions of Spain, is spoken and written correctly. Look at what the world is like. Well, when we finished our 8th season of La Voz we had been talking about that monarchy, that Visigothic society in which Spain was changing its skin. It is doubtful that the deepest roots changed because we described what were the privileged castes of the Visigoths and it seemed that we were reading today's newspaper. But the reality is that yes, there is a change of skin that in the end those who end up paying the price are always those who do not belong to the privileged castes. That is where we stayed at the time and where we are going to continue today and, of course, always accompanying us with your proverbial wisdom. Dolores, Dolores. It is a very good evening, a very good morning. Very good afternoon.

00:02:44
Lorenzo Ramirez: How are you, Don Cesar? Well, I am delighted. Another season of riding with you through that history of Spain that is so well known, not only for many of those who fill their mouths with the word Spain, but also for others who are not even aware of the degree of stupidity that they have over their heads. The truth is that the Spanish educational system has done a lot to make this stupidity grow, but evidently, apart from knowing a list of Visigoth kings and almost the previous generation more than mine, we know little of this society that in the end marks us a bit a line of history that later we would know as feudalism, but that in reality practically begins right now and that in some cases, as you say, we have not even left it in the year 2022.

00:03:30
César Vidal: It's not like that, it's like that. I didn't have to learn the list of the Gothic kings, but I think I must have been one of the first ones, that we only stopped at the most important ones and we didn't have to know the whole list, but until one or two years before mine, we still had to learn the whole list. And there were some professors who regretted that they had taken that burden off our shoulders. They thought it was a pity that we didn't know the list of the Gothic kings, by the way, Gothic kings that we already saw at the time that they were very important because ultimately they gathered the Legislative Power and the Executive Power, almost, almost the judicial power concentrated.

00:04:15
Lorenzo Ramirez: Especially since they set foot on Spanish soil. I mean, until that moment they did not have it very clear. They stepped on Spanish soil and they said no, no, here we have to make the king. King and well, well, to found a figure of the monarchy, which I insist, is that we have still dragged it to this day, right?

00:04:32
César Vidal: Yes, and also I don't know if they saw the Hispanics and said this is going to complain, but the truth is that they went in that direction, in that way of shaping society with the Visigothic monarchy. It has a very important role in the year 654, after Christ, the Fuero Juzgo, Oliver Oro, a book of the Judgments that compiled and promulgated it, which we will talk about in future programs and which was really a compilation of laws. About half of them came from the time of Leovigild. Then there were some of Chindas 5th and his successors. And really the Fuero Juzgo is of enormous importance because the differentiation that had existed until then between Goths and Hispano-Romans disappears. Of course, some interpret this as the merger of the two peoples, the fact that there was only one people, etc., etc. Well, this is a half-truth. That is to say, effectively the law from now on applies to the Hispanic Romans and applies to the Goths. But it must also be said that because all the Roman laws that still applied, those Hispanic Romans disappeared completely, as did their institutions. That is to say, what we have here is a mold, a putting inside. The Visigothic mold. Already every living thing. And that is something that is going to have its consequences. For example, in the territorial order the provinces had had a civil governor, a military chief. Well, then the Goths arrived and it was over, because in those provinces there was a duke and the duke absorbed all kinds of military, civil and judicial powers. What happens? Sometimes the territory was too large for the duke to effectively control military, civil and judicial matters. That territory, that province, was divided into territories or sometimes into cities, and a count was in charge of that. So you know that we have dukes and counts, and there is another circumstance that is enormously important and that we saw at the time when we studied the long, very long presence of Rome in Hispania. And it is that the Romans had brought to Spain the municipal system, which, unless it was a perfect democracy. But there was an election, there was a participation of the inhabitants of the municipality, et cetera Se.

00:07:22
Lorenzo Ramirez: It allowed voting with the feet. Now we can't even vote with our feet.

00:07:27
César Vidal: To have it from the lower empire. That became more and more difficult and it became more and more blurred. But with the Visigoths it disappears and the Roman municipality disappears completely and what arrives are new officials that completely replace what was the old Roman municipality. And now look how beautiful this is because it shows how there are sinister constants in the history of Spain at the end of the 6th century, those officials who were the curiales, who even had to put their money to make the municipality work, etc. Well, the curiales stopped collecting taxes and began to collect them by agents of the Visigothic treasury who, as you can imagine, plundered everything in their path. That is to say, we have the curiales again, who are also people that you know, the people of the town one day give them a bad stone, etc, etc. Well, what we are doing here from now on is that there are some agents who are dedicated to suck the blood of the poor wretches who live in these places. Indeed, those who still lived in municipalities that were no longer even the shadow of the Roman municipality, because they were the people on whom these guys fell and took away everything that is within the situation. As this situation was very difficult. In the following century, and this was studied very well by Claudio Sánchez Albornoz, the bishops managed that in a good part of the cities what the count had to do, they did it themselves. And then the bishop became the one who decided the life within the city, the one who dedicated himself to bleed the people as much as possible, etcetera, etcetera, with which they were delighted. I mean, that was really falling on a body that could be mollar and getting as much out of it as possible.

00:09:29
Lorenzo Ramirez: In addition, she had the power to convert servants into clerics, which of course she had, she had a self-interest effectively, so that they were already directly dependent on her. They were not a part. They went from being a part of the aristocracy to being above the aristocracy.

00:09:43
César Vidal: Which is what this has always been about. And then, in addition, it has generally always been dealt with by adding hypocritical phrases of the type of the Church does not seek privileges, it will not ask for them, it grants them.

00:09:55
Lorenzo Ramirez: No.

César Vidal: It is not the last straw. Of course, with some municipalities that ceased to be municipalities where the fertilizers of the time were falling, looking for how to fleece as much as possible the poor who lived in the city. And then, after a few decades, the bishops decided to become lords of gallows and knife, because the life of the cities was dying. And the Visigoth society is a society that is becoming more and more realized, more and more rural and more feudalistic. And in this sense, although feudalism will have its importance already in a full Middle Ages, at the time of the Reconquest, etc., however, already during the Visigothic monarchy, this society becomes more and more realized and feudal. And what happens? And this is enormously important, because great lordships appear and who rules in those great lordships, in those estates? Well, the Lord. And there, of course, even if there was one. The official submission to the monarch, to the Visigothic state, etc.. Those lords were tyrants who did absolutely what they wanted, that is, they collected taxes, they told the people what they had to work, they administered justice and could even impose the death penalty. They demanded from the colonists military service which man, sometimes it was to serve the king, but many times it was for their own wars.

00:11:34
Lorenzo Ramirez: And for the owner's army. For the landlord's army that in fact in the beginning the highest level of servitude was that. A lot of people don't know that. People think that first you worked the land, you paid a census, first you served as a soldier and then progressively institutionalized what in feudal society would be a clear case that they gave you land to work and in exchange you paid a census. But you were not only paying a census to your lord, you were also paying a census to the king and also these relationships were inherited, so you died, but your son was still in the same situation that you were in.

00:12:07
César Vidal: Not exactly, and of course, in this, in these lordships, which is really the beginning of feudalism, where the feudal lord in the large estate did what he wanted, there was a center that was the villa or the Roman villa, the UI, the Roman villa that became the villa and that was a kind of capital of the large estate and there the Lord did what he wanted and of course the people who were attached to that lordship. The colonists, the poor little ones, were the ones who maintained the building completely, but with little benefit. That is, beyond quite miserably supporting their families, they were there to work so that they paid taxes and then to receive the burdens that came from the privileged castes.

00:12:58
Lorenzo Ramirez: This was called semi free, semi free of settlers, semi free, because then there were those who did have a contract and could break their agreement, there were others who were indeed the least, but we would be talking about these settlers or semi free, no?

00:13:13
César Vidal: Yes, their freedom was also very limited, although the truth is that you look at the situation of the citizens of certain countries like Spain and the truth is that they were in a colonized situation. That is to say, no, we are not going to deceive ourselves in this respect. Here the social division and what was expected of each one, well, it was as clear as day in that sense. Finally, these people of a closed and semi-feudal rural world, or at least they were the ones who maintained the whole social pyramid and the privileged castes took advantage of it. In other words, this is the reality. And of course, at certain times, certain lords had a strength that of course the king avoided having problems with them, whether they were civil lords or ecclesiastical lords. In other words, that is the reality. In the midst of this situation, which is not difficult to see, that is to say, an immense majority dedicated to agricultural tasks, to be bled with taxes, to have burdens such as military service imposed on them, to endure an administration of justice that used to have the name of justice, to endure police forces that did not defend them, but were organs of public order at the service of the privileged castes. Well, together with those and those of the cities that were falling increasingly under the control of the bishops, another of the privileged castes, there were some places, very few, which were villages and specific places that were not subject to any lord, that is, within what were the cities, excluding the cities and excluding those large estates in the hands of lords, then in between there were some places, there were some villages that were not subject to the jurisdiction of the new lord, which was feudal from any point of view. And these people, it is curious, tried to preserve at least some vestiges of what had been the Roman municipal order. That is to say, for example, there was a public assembly of neighbors, what was called the Viking Forum public convents, where the horn was sounded, everyone went to meet and then there, for example, it was decided that the neighbor was moving the boundaries and was taking a little piece of land from the neighbor next door and that he should not do it. There it was decided, for example, how to make communal use of the meadows and forests. Meadows and forests. It was decided there, for example, at a given moment, if a cattle had entered some fields or vineyards and caused damage, what punishment should be imposed? There it was decided, for example, if a deer escaped to see how to organize the hunting of the deer. But it was in these villages, in these places isolated from the great lords and, of course, without being cities, that some people retained some freedom. That is to say, there were still farmers who, although they had to pay some taxes, etcetera, etcetera, nevertheless, they were not subjected to a lord, they were not subjected to a bishop, they were not subjected to certain officials. And of course, in some of these towns the people could breathe a little more. Along with all this panorama, which is a panorama in short, that. That one understands how some people idealize the Visigoth society. But it depended on where you fell. Among the papers that were discovered years after the death of José Antonio Primo de Rivera, there were some that were dedicated to sing the Visigothic society, among others, because he knew very little about history. He had some ideas, generally romantic and wrong, of the wrong history of Spain. And then there are songs to the Visigothic world that some people say well, but that's because the Nazis were with the Aryan? Well surely not.

00:17:36
Lorenzo Ramirez: Maybe because of the way they persecuted the Jews, the Visigoths, because they also had a lot to do with it.

00:17:41
César Vidal: I think it is a subject that we are going to deal with, I think more for the fact that José Antonio had an idealized vision of the aristocracy and also a paternalistic aristocracy that was supposed to be fair, etc. and he believed in benevolent empires and he believed that indeed the Visigoths had been a chivalrous, aristocratic society. If that's true, it was an aristocratic society of privileged castes, but as long as you didn't belong to the privileged castes which were very limited, the life that you led in a very.

00:18:13
Lorenzo Ramirez: The cult of the land, the cult of manual labor was also black.

00:18:17
César Vidal: All that was the history. So, of course, let's see, taking into account that José Antonio's favorite movie was Three Bengali Lancers, because it seemed to him that the British in India were doing a magnificent job, something that his followers usually hide. But that is something more than proven. Well, he believed in that idea, in the empire towards God, in that empire that was supposed to be benevolent because it never asks those it exploits how they feel and of course, in the idea that it was an aristocratic culture and all that, that it was an aristocratic culture, there is no doubt that there were privileged castes, it is undeniable, but the vast majority of the population had a very bad time. Very badly. Yes, except if we think, apart from the privileged castes, those few who lived in some lost place in the vicinity of the bishop, the lord or the king.

00:19:14
Lorenzo Ramírez: And those who also served at a private level to the nobility, the sayones. In this case there was, you could say that there was a little bit more of an exchange relationship, right? Yes.

00:19:24
César Vidal: Yes, or maybe not so much squeezed, but it was like that. And of course, then apart from that, there were other castes below. That is, there were the slaves. Of course, obviously anybody who was a colonist, even if he was squeezed a lot, he was not a slave.

00:19:44
Lorenzo Ramirez: In fact, when you misbehaved, one of the first things that the slaves took away from you.

00:19:48
César Vidal: Exactly. Lorenzo Ramirez: Okay. Significant. And then there was another thin segment of the population that you mentioned and to which we are going to dedicate more attention in due course, because there was a very hard legislation of the Visigoths against them, which were the Jews who at some times let them breathe and at other times reasoned them even what they breathed or tried to force them to convert to Catholicism.

00:20:16
Lorenzo Ramirez: Taking away all the.

00:20:17
César Vidal: Country, indeed, taking everything away from them and with a very hard legislation that we will have the opportunity to see in the coming weeks. So, of course, it is a society. And here is the nut of much of what has happened later in the history of Spain. It is a society of privileged castes. The privileged castes decide where the majority of society goes and, of course, they don't give a damn what happens to the majority of society. They want it to go well for them. Second, they are a series of privileged castes that live off the work of others, which is also significant. And the parallels seem to me to be obvious. And significant. Third, it is a society that does not think about working. Moreover, the idea of working manually is offensive. I mean, how would a knight, a bishop, a clergyman, etcetera, etc. go to work. That would be taken care of by slaves, colonists and the rest of the unfortunates. In other words, that is the story. And also, a society in which there were a series of mechanisms, logically, to suck the blood of those who finally worked, who were nothing more than, in general terms, Treasury officials, who were dedicated to fall like ticks on these people and, as they would say here, to siphon them. That is to say, it acted as a siphon that took the money from the poor who often worked in inhuman conditions down there, to the privileged castes above. This is the reality of Visigoth society. Later, as we will see, they wrote interesting things. They must have been good goldsmiths. Anyway, all that is something that we are going to include in the story. But the society was that and I think it has parallels, at least disturbing in relation to the current Spanish society, which is also a society of the Ancien Régime. Of course, logically the tax collectors of the time did not have computers as they do now, they could not use computers to see how people were being plundered. The tax rate was lower and even, in the end, less burdensome than now. But the system is a system that has truly disturbing parallels.

00:22:46
Lorenzo Ramírez: With pandemics included. Not because it is a plague, it is a plague the one known as Augustinian plague. Augustinian plague, bubonic plague, 17th century in the Iberian Peninsula. A society, a slave social structure, basically ruled by an oligarchy. And well, besides working in the fields, there was also war and there was also hunger and there was also disease, as archeology has shown and later, more or less the life expectancy. And it was around 30 years, of which, well, you spent more than half of it already paying taxes in the sixth century, which is quite revealing.

00:23:22
César Vidal: Indeed, and if the Middle Ages were around 30 years, except for some of the privileged castes that could live longer? Sure, but it tells you what that society was like.

00:23:33
Lorenzo Ramirez: Of masses about 50 years ago would be those who had more possible. Some could even make it to 50 so we can see the difference between one and the other, no?

00:23:42
César Vidal: I when some pretend to return to the Middle Ages, I put that the Catholic Church controlled everything and you are of history as Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera, eh? That is, absolutely fish and green. You don't know what you are saying. A couple of weeks ago, on a trip to Washington, I spent most of the afternoon talking with a very important political figure in Washington. And at one point I suddenly remarked Well, you know there are people who are trying to extol the middle ages, and so on, and when I told him this he burst out laughing so hard that it must have been heard even in the Senate and he said to me Well, his wish is for the vast majority to be poor. And I said Well, that's a very good definition of the Middle Ages. Indeed, except for the king, the nobility and the Catholic Church. But the high clergy. The Middle Ages are characterized because everyone was poor, sometimes miserably poor and died. But come on, that is, with an average age of 30 years. So those who have been singing since the Middle Ages.

00:24:52
Lorenzo Ramirez: 13 and also with a democratic involution that you have just mentioned clearly because it is really a step backwards, that is, that Rome was more democratic than this Visigothic society, which is then the germ of that feudal society. And then the Muslims will come and all these little things we will not talk about in the future, but I am sure that there were many people who were not aware that this was so and in the end it is a continuous leap. The moment there is any hint that there might be a little bit of democracy, immediately the sword comes and the Treasury comes to put an end to it. No?

00:25:21
César Vidal: Yes, no, no, this is obvious and this explains, although we will see it in its day, why when the Muslims arrived they spread very easily. Yes, of course, because people said these are not worse.

00:25:35
Lorenzo Ramirez: Jews, including many.

00:25:37
César Vidal: Jews, of course, they were convinced that they were infinitely better than the Visigoths and they were right. That is, that is the true reality. So, anyway, we have shown this and we are going to continue with our list of Visigoth monarchs. Next week we will have the opportunity to talk about. Sisebuto recess of all these good people and maybe we can start talking. Of that criminally anti-Semitic legislation of the Visigoths that explains many of the disasters.

00:26:12
Lorenzo Ramirez: Previous, which was also in crescendo, it was in crescendo.

00:26:16
César Vidal: And that also occurs in something that surprises people and that is the fact that within the privileged castes there are rivalries. Of course there are radicals, but they still belong to the privileged castes. And then that is noticed in the fact that among them they can confront each other sometimes even violently, to have this piece or that piece of power. But then, if at some point they see that there is some movement below, they close ranks and ask for a pardon for Griñán.

00:26:47
Lorenzo Ramirez: Or they get together at the Davos Forum.

00:26:49
César Vidal: Or they get together at the Davos Forum. This is the reality. But well, God willing, we will talk about that in the following weeks. Thank you very much for everything.

00:26:59
Lorenzo Ramirez: A pleasure, as always. A pleasure as always. A big hug.
